Academic Reviewers: “Why You Gotta Be So Mean?”

In Monday’s edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education, Erik Schneiderhan offered some insight into the problem of getting “mean” reviews from reviewers at academic journals in “Why You Gotta Be So Mean?”  The readers’ comments that follow the piece are just as interesting: reviewers and editors chime in with their experiences and perspectives. Together, the article and the comments generate a valuable conversation about the difference between honest, yet constructive, reviews and reviews that are “nasty without reason, critical without being constructive, discouraging where they should be encouraging”  (Schneiderhan, 2013).
